When looking for drug and alcohol rehab, one of the first questions many people ask is, “How much will it cost?” If you have Cigna Health insurance, there’s a good chance your policy will provide financial assistance and cover some or all of the costs for drug and alcohol addiction treatment. Your out-of-pocket costs will depend on the particular plan you have, your location, and which rehab center you choose for yourself or your loved one.

What Is Cigna Insurance?

Cigna is one of the leading health insurance providers in the United States, with over 180 million members.1 The company has a network of over 1.5 million relationships with healthcare providers globally and a network of over 175,000 mental health and behavioral care health providers—a number that has grown by more than 70% since 2016.1

Cigna Insurance Plans and Coverage Levels

Cigna offers a number of different coverage plans to individuals, employers, and families. Types of plans include exclusive provider organization (EPO), point-of-service (POS), health maintenance organization (HMO), and preferred provider organization (PPO).2

With an HMO, you are required to choose a primary care provider within a local network of healthcare providers. HMOs generally cost less than other healthcare plans, provided you receive care within the network. EPOs give you the freedom to choose from a network of participating providers, and may require you to choose a primary care provider. If you seek treatment outside of the network within your EPO plan, your costs will likely not be covered.

POS plans offer in-network care at a low cost, and you must choose a primary care provider. You must also receive a referral from your primary care provider in order to see a specialist. POS plans allow you to see in- or out-of-network providers, but you will pay higher costs for out-of-network care.

Cigna PPO insurnace gives you access to a large network of healthcare providers, and you are not required to choose a primary care provider. With a PPO, you can see a specialist without a referral from a primary care provider.

In addition to a wide range of plans offered, Cigna provides an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) if you have a policy provided through your employer. The EAP provides members with access to licensed clinicians to help them through any emotional or behavioral issues they are facing, including substance use disorder. Through this program, you can meet with a counselor in person or chat with them online or on the telephone.

Cigna provides members with coverage to get the assistance they need to get and stay sober. Cigna has a thorough list of in-network providers that provide quality, cost-effective drug and alcohol addiction treatments.

Does Cigna Insurance Cover Inpatient Alcohol Rehab?

Depending on your plan, Cigna may pay some of the costs of your inpatient rehab. Cigna’s lowest plan (bronze) offers the lowest monthly premiums, but you will pay higher deductibles and generally have more out-of-pocket expenses. For those with gold and platinum plans, your out-of-pocket costs will be lower.

Inpatient treatment programs covered by Cigna may either be part of a hospital program or a standalone residential treatment facility. Your stay may vary in length from 6 weeks to 3 months, depending on your needs and how your recovery is going. Cigna Insurance for alcohol addiction treatment typically covers any treatment length that is recommended by a medical professional to treat the patient’s addiction.

Types of Cigna Inpatient Alcohol Rehab

Your Cigna insurance coverage may cover inpatient substance abuse treatment programs including:3

  • Residential treatment.
  • Acute inpatient and medical detoxification.
  • Partial hospitalization programs.

Generally speaking, it is best to choose a provider that is in-network with Cigna to keep your out-of-pocket expenses lower. Cigna pays more of the cost when you work with an in-network provider. You may still have some out-of-network expenses, but fewer than you would if you choose a provider within the Cigna network.

Does Cigna Cover Outpatient Alcohol Rehab?

Cigna may cover some or all of the cost of your outpatient rehab costs, depending on the particular plan you have. Outpatient treatment programs take place in a variety of places, including hospitals, mental health clinics, therapist offices, and rehab facilities. In outpatient rehab, you do not stay overnight or live where you are receiving treatment.3

Cigna health insurance has partnerships with drug and alcohol addiction centers in order to provide outpatient rehab services at discounted rates to members. These facilities are considered in-network. Depending on your plan, you may also go to out-of-network providers, oftentimes for a higher, less discounted rate. Covered expenses are determined by your plan, the outpatient rehab you have chosen, and the number of days you will be attending.

Types of Cigna Outpatient Alcohol Rehab

Outpatient rehab services that may be covered by Cigna insurance plans include:

  • Individual, family, and group therapy.
  • Intensive outpatient treatment.
  • Medical detoxification/medication management.

Does Cigna Cover Mental Health Treatment?

Cigna insurance does cover mental health treatment.4 The amount covered is dependent on your particular plan and the services you are receiving. Cigna has a focus on helping individuals and employers address whole-person health—including mental health. The company provides support across the health spectrum, and this includes mental health treatment.

Many people living with substance use disorder and addiction troubles may also have mental health issues including PTSD, anxiety, and depression. These are known as co-occurring disorders. Cigna covers mental health treatment when you are in inpatient and outpatient rehab, and outside of rehab as well.

How to Check My Cigna Coverage for Alcohol Rehab

Cigna health insurance plans cover substance use disorder treatment for most addictions. Most drug rehab centers that accept Cigna can treat almost any addiction and offer a range of individualized services to meet your particular needs. Cigna may offer addiction treatment for the following substances:

  • Alcohol.
  • Benzodiazepines.
  • Cocaine.
  • Heroin.
  • Prescription opioids.
  • Marijuana.
  • Methamphetamine.
  • Stimulants.
  • Sleep aids/sedatives.
  • Other substances.

No matter what your insurance plan covers, it is important not to let cost be a deterrent from getting the help you need to get and stay sober. Inpatient and outpatient rehab saves lives. There are many alternative methods to help pay for the expenses insurance doesn’t cover. Some rehab facilities offer payment plans for any out-of-pocket expenses you incur, and others offer scholarships and grants to those who need financial assistance.
